DraftSight – End the frustration!

As many of you may know, in my past life I worked for an Autodesk reseller. During this time, I became an Autodesk systems specialist in many of the product offerings that the company had.  Needless to say, I am very picky on my 2D design tool of choice.  If you are going to find something to replace AutoCAD, it had better be good, and something I can be comfortable with and productive with immediately. Recently, Dessault released a fantastic FREE product called DraftSight, to help companies deal with DWG files they may have, that they require opening, but can either not open them because they are too old, or because they no longer have AutoCAD to open the files.

Also, I have experienced first hand as a designer, that I couldn’t open files that were newer than the software I was working with.

This was always

frustrating, and involved phone calls and files being sent back and forth being saved as…or converted, etc.

Simply put, I love DraftSight. Oh, and did I mention it was FREE?  It’s also quick to download and install.  I am still scratching my head as to how they could create a full featured CAD editing tool with such a small filesize and footprint.  Very impressive indeed.

Recently I put together a fun little video communicating the frustrations I think many of us have had as designers. I would like to share it with you here. Please take a look and let me know what you think! As always I welcome your emails and comments to dan.gamsby@javelin-tech.com

Haha. Thanks Jeff! Actually, in true Survivorman style, I did the entire video myself. It was a lot of work, but glad to see it is paying off. It was fun.

You always that much of a sandbagger?? Your first estimate was it was going to take an entire day to update the file…then suddenly you can do it in an hour? ….before you even knew DraftSight existed!

Smallest unit of Engineering time = 1 day
