Are you looking for a new SolidWorks workstation? You may have already reviewed the SolidWorks 2012 Hardware FAQ available on our website which will help guide you toward SolidWorks certified systems (http://www.javelin-tech.com/main/support/solidworks_2012_hardware_faq.htm).
However, you could still be faced with huge list of options when selecting a system from a major manufacturer, and if you are building your own custom system you have even more choices to make.
An excellent guide during this decision making process are the results from the SolidWorks Performance Test benchmarking tool that was introduced in SolidWorks 2011 (http://www.javelin-tech.com/blog/2011/08/sw-benchmark/).
Fortunately, over 3000 users have taken the time to share their results on SolidWorks’ website (http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/shareyourscore.htm). This gives those looking for new systems the opportunity to review the performance of many models with various specifications, even to review custom built systems and how they are performing.
Simply type in the computer model, or even the specific component you are looking for information on, into search field. The results will be filtered to show you exactly what kind of performance you can expect if you decide to go with that option.
The next time you are looking for a new system take a few minutes to review it’s stats on the SolidWorks website. This can help ensure you get the right system for your application. And, once you have your new SolidWorks powerhouse running, why not take a few minutes to run the benchmark and post your own scores for the benefit of other SolidWorks users who are trying to decide what they should buy.

In addition, as a SolidWorks user, engineer, and in no way associated with SolidWorks nor any of the computer suppliers, I have created a thread on the SolidWorks forums discussing what I think are the best computer specifications for SolidWorks. I just updated it this week, so it is very current. I include Dell, HP, and Boxx; let me know on the thread if there is another manufacturer you would like for me to spec. I also describe the components for two additional machines if you want to build it yourself.
