Because the SOLIDWORKS SustainabilityXpress lives right in the SOLIDWORKS Task Pane, it effortlessly becomes a natural part of your workflow. Sustainability data is even stored in the model file as standard engineering information for the design — so when the model is shared with others, the Life Cycle Assessment data is available to them as well. Individual model assessments are then compiled into one report when assembly begins.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

When determining the environmental impact of a product, LCA looks at everything that happens in the production, use, and final disposal of the product. This even includes all the transportation that occurs between the stages. Decisions on the material used, how it is manufactured, … can result in vastly different effects on the environment. SOLIDWORKS Sustainability shows you these impacts and helps you to improve your design.

Environmental Dashboard

SOLIDWORKS Sustainability measures the environmental impact over the life cycle of your product in terms of four factors: carbon footprint, air acidification, water eutrophication, and total energy consumed. When evaluating all of these stages, four environmental impacts are measured.

• Carbon Footprint – production of greenhouse gasses
• Total Energy Consumed – self explanatory
• Effect on Air – specifically the contributor to acid rain
• Effect on Water – which results in algae blooms in coastal waters

Because it’s all done in real time, you’ll be able to easily understand the environmental impact of your design choices — and effortlessly make sustainability a standard part of your design process.

Find Similar Material

Material selection is an important contributor to determining the environmental impact of a design. It is also important in all other aspects of design. That is why SOLIDWORKS SustainabilityXpress includes Find Similar. It allows you to quickly and easily search the built-in material database for close alternatives to your current material. Even if you don’t do sustainable design, this is a handy utility for everyone.
