Industry: Design & Engineering Services

Previous CAD: Pro/ENGINEER

Products used: SolidWorks and PhotoWorks

Goals

The firm needed a design package that would be cost-effective, have a quick learning curve, and would allow the design team to send sophisticated CAD models to clients.

Solution

We evaluated several packages including AutoCAD, but chose SolidWorks software because of its great value-to-price ratio. Pro/ENGINEER proved to be too expensive and cumbersome to use. AutoCAD lacked the features we needed most. Features we like most in SolidWorks are the automatic updates of parts, assemblies, and drawings when there are changes; the FeatureManager tree; and the ability to create photorealistic images with PhotoWorks.

For a store fixture design using SolidWorks David Bryce was able to calculate lateral support brace lengths. "This would have been difficult with other software because each vertical rib has a different length and curvature, and, therefore, each lateral brace that runs between the ribs, has a different length and is mounted to the ribs at different locations. Furthermore, each mounting point required an asymmetrical, rotating joint."

"SolidWorks provided braces that would meet the joints at the exact cut length and angle. This was critical because all of the pieces were made beforehand and assembled on the site, standing 25 feet in the air on hoists. If the pieces didn’t fit, the tubing would have to be re-done and would not be ready in time for the client's grand opening deadline."

Results

  • Reduced design cycle from three months to two weeks
  • Lowered development costs by 40%
  • Reduced errors by 50%
  • Tripled marketshare in one year
