Kerr and Company is a product and system development team, based in Toronto, On., who focus on research and strategic innovation.

Challenge

Kerr and Company is an industrial design firm that wanted to spread technical competence more broadly throughout its design team. They needed software that had a relatively short learning curve, was user friendly and could be easily applied to ongoing projects. Additionally their clients were beginning to rely on the design team to provide full service design competence. The resolution of this problem would ensure that the key knowledge of how to use the software was dispersed within the company and not housed with one person. As for the technical challenge, much of Kerr's design work is injected molded plastic with highly organic form development and they needed software that could handle this complex math.

 

Solution

We evaluated Pro/ENGINEER, but chose SolidWorks® CAD software because it is user friendly and requires a minimal training investment. It is very easy to use and learn, which in the end saves us time and money. And it is a very versatile piece of software as it is seamlessly compatible with other engineering, production and form development software. We especially like the way SolidWorks® CAD software links files together, and how it will automatically update changes throughout the model.
