How to remove Background Colour from SOLIDWORKS Screenshots

Article by Mehdi Rezaei, CSWE, last updated on June 29, 2018

From time to time, we need to take SOLIDWORKS screenshots of our designs or simulation results and insert them into a Microsoft PowerPoint or Word document. However, if the background of our presentation or report file is not white, the rectangular boundary will show around the model. The same thing will happen if the background colour of SOLIDWORKS graphics area is not set to Plain White.

Some precautions could be considered before taking the screenshots. For instance, you may want to have no colors or gradient in colors shown in the background. In that case, you may select Plain White under Apply Scene icon. Also, you may want to remove shadows or apply RealView graphics. One other important item to remember is using Perspective for large or long models.

SOLIDWORKS Screenshots of a part or assembly model can be saved without any background or surrounding frame colour. To achieve that, a *.PNG format must be selected for Save as type

And then via the “Options…” button, “Remove Background” should be checked off.

Note that only *.PNG format allows access to “Remove background” options and can be saved with a transparent background

In the following image, SOLIDWORKS Screenshots of an assembly model with a transparent background have been copied into two PowerPoint slides; one slide has a coloured background and the other has a white background. You can clearly see that the model can be displayed without a background colour:
