While providing technical support for SOLIDWORKS, I come across a lot of cases where users have to change SOLIDWORKS Serial numbers.
However, if the installation was completed using an “Administrative Image” then the serial number cannot be changed through the Installation manager. Either it has to be done by the IT administrator from the machine end where the admin image was created/deployed from; or it could be done on the client machine through the registry editor.
Note: You will require admin privileges to access Registry editor.
Follow the steps below to modify the serial number through Windows registry:
STEP 1: Open the Registry Editor Window through Windows search > Type Regedit > Right click and run it as an administrator.
STEP 2: Browse to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\Licenses\Serial Numbers
STEP 3: The SOLIDWORKS key to the right displays the SOLIDWORKS serial number.
STEP 4: Right click on the SOLIDWORKS key > Modify > This launches Edit String Window.
STEP 5: Replace the serial number that was previously entered with the new serial number in the “Value Data” field. Now close the registry editor window and launch SOLIDWORKS.
