One of the powerful tools required in both pre- and post-processing FEA simulations is the ability to have an insight into the internal mesh elements of a body. This is now available in SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2016 Mesh Sectioning.
Pre-Processing Mesh Sectioning
The quality of the internal mesh elements can be checked for any adjustment to mesh prior to running a simulation study. A mesh sectioning plot can be created from a mesh quality plot. As shown in Fig.1, right-click on mesh quality plot and select Mesh Sectioning.
Similar to section view of a model, you are able to view a section plot of the mesh. Internal mesh elements are visualized. This enables you to judge the quality of the internal mesh elements before running the study and perform any required adjustments to the mesh. In the Mesh Section Property Manager, you can select a reference plane or cylinder for orientation of the mesh section plane. Furthermore, the mesh section plane can dynamically be positioned in the graphic area, as demonstrated in Fig. 2.
Post-Processing Mesh Sectioning
Mesh Sectioning can also be used in the post-processing stage of results. By sectioning result plots, you can now view the edges of the internal mesh elements that are clipped by a section plane.
First of all, mesh needs to be superimposed on a result plot. As a reminder, to include mesh into the results plot: right-click on a result plot > setting > Boundary Option > Mesh. Now, right click on the results plot to access the Mesh Sectioning option, as depicted in Fig. 3.
Now, you are able to perform further investigation into the internal mesh elements. Select a reference plane or cylinder for orientation of the mesh section plane. Similar to pre-processing step, the mesh section plane can dynamically be positioned in the graphic area (see Fig. 4).
