When using any of the native 3DEXPERIENCE Apps installed on your computer, you want to make sure that the environment is configured properly. One of the first things I like to change on the first use of my DELMIA CAM apps are a few settings in my preferences dialog. The settings below will make sure that you’re set up for success when creating CNC Programs to run your machines using the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.

Changing Mouse Profile

Changing the mouse profile is one of the first things I do on a fresh installation of any of the 3DEXPERIENCE Apps. This will default to “3DEXPERIENCE” on the first launch utilizing the standard 3DEXPERIENCE mouse and gesture assignments. Being a SOLIDWORKS user for longer, those gestures are engrained in my muscle memory, so I always swap it to “SOLIDWORKS”. This will make sure that zooming, rotating, and panning get done in the same way as our favorite CAD Tool. This setting can be found at the top of our Preferences page when we launch it.

Selection of Simple Tools

The second setting I turn on is to “Allow selection of simple tool”. Typically, when I am creating tool resources in something like Shop Floor Machining, I am doing it on the fly using the machining wizard. Basically, I am defining the key cutting geometry for a given tool and not defining the entire tool/tool holder assembly. By turning this setting on we can tell the software that we are fine with programming using just the tool itself as opposed to the entire tool assembly. For most programs, this works out fine and gets us from model to machine quickly and efficiently.

Displaying Toolpaths for All

Another great usability setting to turn on is “Display tool path for all operations”. Typically, only the operation that we have selected from the manager has its toolpath displayed. This behavior is nice as it doesn’t clutter the viewing window however it can be cumbersome to try to find a related operation for a given toolpath. By toggling this setting on, all of our toolpaths are displayed on the model and selecting a toolpath will allow editing of the associated operation. It can be taken a step further by toggling visibility without having to touch the setting again.

Post Processor Technology

The final option I always turn on is the post processor generation technology for ICAM Foundations. The ICAM Foundations is an included, free license for generating our G-Code when we are finished writing our program and ready to push it to the machine. There are other technologies that can be used with the DELMIA CAM apps but those require a dedicated license that you may or may not have. Without a license, the post processor will not run and will not output G-Code. By making sure the ICAM Foundations technology is selected, we can ensure that we can turn our CNC Program into G-Code.
