Spline curves are a great way to create smooth and organic shapes in SOLIDWORKS. With the use of spline points, spline handles, and control polygons, you can create curves that are highly customizable and can easily be manipulated to meet your design needs. Spline points are the points that define the shape of the spline curve. They are represented by small dots along the curve. Spline handles, on the other hand, are the little lines that protrude from the spline points. They control the slope of the curve at the point they are attached to. Control polygons are the lines that connect the spline points. They represent the shape of the curve between each point and are used to control the smoothness of the curve. Let’s take a look at how these elements can be used to change the shape of a spline curve.
Step 1: Create a Spline Curve
To start, create a new sketch on the plane where you want to create the spline. Click on the “Spline” tool in the Sketch toolbar, then click on the starting point of your spline. Keep clicking along the curve until you reach the endpoint of your spline.
Step 2: Edit the Spline Points
To change the shape of the spline curve, click on the spline you want to edit. A series of control points will appear along the spline. These are the spline points that define the shape of the curve. You can click and drag these points to adjust the shape of the curve.
Step 3: Adjust the Spline Handles
Spline handles can be activated by selecting a spline point along the curve. These handles are comprised of three parts, the Spline Handle Direction, Magnitude, and the Combination Handle. The mouse cursor provides feedback for each different handle point, and you can use each of these handles to control the slope of the curve at the point they are attached to.
Step 4: Modify the Control Polygon
The control polygon represents the shape of the curve between each point. To activate the control polygons, you must right-click the spline and select Display Control Polygon. To modify the shape of the curve, you can easily adjust the positions of the control polygons. Click on the spline point you want to adjust, the control polygons will highlight yellow, and then click and drag the control polygon to change the shape of the curve.
Step 5: Experiment and Iterate
Using spline points, spline handles, and control polygons requires a bit of trial and error to get the curve exactly as you want it. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different shapes and control points. SOLIDWORKS makes it easy to modify the spline and adjust its shape until it looks just right.
With a bit of practice and experimentation, you’ll be creating beautiful curves in no time!
