Hey Dude Where’s My 3D Printed Car? In Winnipeg!
A Winnipeg company has created an electric car with a 3D printed body, yes the entire body is 3D printed! It’s called the Urbee and is one of the most efficient vehicles on the planet. For a review of the inspiration, the challenges and the amazing results from the Urbee project take a look at this TedX Winnipeg presentaion by lead designer Jim Kor who says “I use nature as my teacher”. Here is another video showing the 3D printed Urbee on the road.
White House Support
In his 2013 State of Union address President Barak Obama singles out 3D printing as the technology that “has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything” and the key to bringing manufacturing jobs back to North America. He goes on to reveal plans for 15 more Advanced Manufacturing Hubs like the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute in Youngstown, OH.
How do you colonize the moon?
With a 3D printer of course. It’s hard enough to get people up there so researchers are looking into using 3D printer technology to fabricate dwellings on the moon using lunar soil as the raw material. This post from the Huffington Post includes pictures of what the future of space travel might look like.
