SOLIDWORKS Installation

SOLIDWORKS Installation procedure & best practice from certified experts

How to manually download SOLIDWORKS software and service packs

The installation file set for SOLIDWORKS is quite large and can take some time to download. In many cases, all that is required, is the installation files for server products, such as SOLIDWORKS PDM, SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM and the SOLIDWORKS SolidNetWork License Manager. In addition, those that want to use the SOLIDWORKS API, can download the SOLIDWORKS API SDK. These manual downloads do not included the prerequisites, that some SOLIDWORKS components require, but the ‘Required Prerequisites’  can be downloaded from here as well. For most of the Server Products, such as SOLIDWORKS PDM, SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM and the SOLIDWORKS SolidNetWork License Manager, these prerequisites are not required. Accessing the Manual Downloads is similar to accessing a full SOLIDWORKS installation. Log into the SOLIDWORKS Customer Portal account and click on Downloads & Updates: Select the service pack you wish to update to: After accepting the license agreement, at the VERY bottom of the Download &…

Running two SOLIDWORKS Version installations / “Where did the calloutformat.txt file go?”

NOTE: this tip is for users that are comfortable with editing a computer registry. BE SURE TO FOLLOW STEPS EXACTLY. The problem I’ll cover in this tip is a fairly common occurrence when a user runs two SOLIDWORKS version installations on the same machine (e.g. SOLIDWORKS 2015 and 2016).  The problem is the user eventually sees an error saying that the “Calloutformat.txt” file cannot be found: Or tapped hole callouts mysteriously start to show as simple drilled holes (just a diameter dimension, no thread mentioned): First, some background information When SOLIDWORKS is installed, the various file locations for things like Hole Wizard hole callouts, templates, etc., are noted in the user registry of the computer so that SOLIDWORKS can find all of the files it needs when you are using it.  Each installation of SOLIDWORKS is usually stored in a separate folder on the computer hard drive.  When you install a new major version…

Is your Antivirus application affecting your your SOLIDWORKS installation?

Windows Services

This post is regarding one of those topics that I repeat daily when speaking with our customers: temporarily disabling any Windows and SOLIDWORKS Antivirus or Anti-spyware applications that may be protecting your system. Before any corporate IT personnel read this and start feeling faint, allow me to clarify…we are speaking of temporarily shutting down the Antivirus applications in terms of your installation of SOLIDWORKS.  More specifically the need to disable the Antivirus or Anti-spyware  if there are modifications or changes to the setup that involve the SOLIDWORKS installation utility. Having said that, among the first comments I will likely see in regard to this post are something along the lines of “Um, Chris, there is a list of Antivirus software that is supposed to be compatible with SOLIDWORKS”. To that statement, I say YES! Indeed there is. However we often see the most stability from an installation of SOLIDWORKS that…
