Hollywood Stuntman turns Superhuman in BIONIC BUILDERS on Discovery Science:

Blurring the line between man and machine, BIONIC BUILDERS is a captivating one-hour special showcasing Casey Pieretti (“the perfect guinea pig”) and Bill Spracher (“the mad scientist-inventor”) as they attempt to merge radical prosthetic design and the human body.

Premiering Thursday, March 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Science, this innovative special thrills as the BIONIC BUILDERS team tries to turn a former Navy diver into a human torpedo and give a one-handed martial arts instructor his very own bionic punching arm.

We had the pleasure to meet with Casey Pieretti and Bill Spracher, the Bionic Builders last month, at SolidWorks World 2011.

As per Kathie Fry, Casey was an active college student and athlete when he lost his leg in an accident caused by a drunk driver. It took several months for him to recover from his traumatic injuries, and during that time he made a decision not to let his accident destroy his life. He began making plans to continue his athletic career after his recovery. After working very hard during several months of physical therapy, Casey started training to become a serious triathlete, setting a goal for himself of not only participating in the most important competitions for amputee athletes, but swimming, cycling, running, and competing against non-amputee athletes as well. All these goals need very specific “legs” and an engineer to design them. Casey’s life changed for the best when he met Bill (the engineer) and they formed a very unique team.

Now Casey comes with an idea, let’s say he wants to scuba dive and he needs a flipper. Bill finds a solution to his problem and creates a leg that can be used both on land and in the sea. Casey tries the leg and proposes enhancements. Bill accepts the challenge and in the end Casey gets a prosthetic propeller which enables him to swim faster than any man on earth.

Or let’s say the movie Starship Troopers is looking for a stuntman that needs to be blown in pieces or eaten by a giant bug. Bill creates a leg that explodes or just acts as a catapult for Casey.

As Casey said, he is no longer disabled, he is super-enabled! He skates, he climbs walls and mountains, he does everything you and I can do and a lot of things that we do not even dare thinking of doing!
