Since 2009, the SOLIDWORKS SpeedPak has been the perfect tool for simplifying sub-assembly components, by replacing heavy geometry with a graphical representation of the external faces.

In SOLIDWORKS 2013 creating and managing SpeedPak configurations became much easier, since it is now done directly from the top level assembly, as shown in this video:
