Why does my SOLIDWORKS Model appear Black?

When a SOLIDWORKS model changes appearance and becomes black, the cause of the change may not be found in the display-state pane… 

SOLIDWORKS Model Appear Black

Red appearance, black model

…but because lights have been disabled.  

Lights are turned off and need to be turned on

 

This is how the same model looks with a directional light enabled:
