Library Feature Parts (.sldlfp) are pre-defined SOLIDWORKS features that can be reused in other parts and assemblies. Saving a file as a Library Feature Part can save you time and effort in creating complex features, such as holes or cuts, that are frequently used in your designs. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to save a file as a Library Feature Part in SOLIDWORKS.
Step 1: Create the feature
Before you can save a feature as a .sldlfp file, you need to create the feature you want to save. This can be a hole, cut, or any other feature that you want to reuse in other parts and assemblies. This also includes sketch features. Sketches can be created and later saved to be used as library features such as thread or weldment profiles.
Step 2: Save the feature as a .sldlfp file
To create the part, it is important that you pre-select the features that you want to be included in the file. Only the features selected will be recognized when the file is used. Select the feature you want to save from the feature manager, select “Save As…”, and then save as a .sldlfp
Step 3: Add the .sldlfp file to the Design Library
Changing the file type will redirect the file location automatically to the Design Library folder. You can then use that directory to specify the desired file location within the design library. After adding the feature to the design library, the icons in the feature manager will change as well. A library books icon will appear at the top level to indicate that this is a library feature part file type. The feature itself will be overlayed with a large “L” to indicate that it is the library feature. Whenever this feature is used in future part files or assemblies, the feature will maintain the “L” icon.
Step 4: Use the Library Feature Part in your designs
To use the Library Feature Part in your designs, simply drag and drop it from the Design Library into your part or assembly. You can then modify the dimensions and parameters as needed to fit your design as necessary.
Saving a file as a Library Feature Part in SOLIDWORKS can save you time and effort in creating complex features that are frequently used in your designs. By following these steps, you can easily create and use these parts in your SOLIDWORKS designs, improving your efficiency and productivity.
