One of the lesser known tools in SOLIDWORKS assembly environment is the “Performance Evaluation” tool. This tool is especially useful when working with large assemblies and helps to identify areas that you can work on to improve the performance when working with a large assembly. Even in some cases, you can select to have the software make changes to your assembly to improve performance. There has been some enhancements that make the SOLIDWORKS 2018 Performance Evaluation Tool even more useful. Some of them are as follows:
Document Open File Details
You can see a list of files by the amount of time required to open them in SOLIDWORKS. Usually that is the first step to identify the culprit of slow performance in a large assembly. Also, clicking on Show These Files shows a list of the files that are updated while the assembly opens.
This option helps you to identify the components with large number of tessellation triangles. There are a few factors that may increase the required number of triangles to represent a part like the complexity of the model and the image quality settings. Generally speaking, the less triangles SOLIDWORKS needs to make a component the better performance you get. Now with this new addition to the Performance Evaluation command you can find the components with more than 5,000 graphic triangles.
Shaded Image Quality
As mentioned before the image quality settings have a great impact on a large assembly performance. We can define image quality as how curve SOLIDWORKS represents the curvatures in the model. Now in SOLIDWORKS 2018, We can see a list of the assembly components with high (80% or greater) and medium-high (60% – 80%) image qualities. If the list of files does not appear, go to Tools > Options > Document Properties > Image Quality and clear the “Apply to all referenced part documents” option. You can then open those components and reduce their image quality by clicking Tools > Options > Document Properties > Image Quality.
This section of Performance Evaluation tool displays a warning if a file contains over 100 appearances applied to faces. You can click on Show These Files to view the list of affected files.
