Happy National 3D Printing Day! A Look Back at 3D Printing in 2016

2016 has been a great year for 3D Printing. A lot has happened in 2016 and given that December 3rd is National 3D Printing Day, I want to take a moment to highlight some of Javelin’s top 3D Printing moments from this great year. In the past year, Javelin’s 3D Printing team has focused on a wide range of industries and has seen significant growth in the Architecture, Automotive and Medical industries, to name a few. Javelin also helped an Olympian and a Paralympian prepare for the Rio 2016 games. Going for Gold This year we sponsored some truly incredible athletes competing in both the Olympic and Paralympic games. Our idea was to support two javelin athletes in a way that only we know how. We ended up designing and 3D Printing crucial components for their life on the road and according to them, made a huge impact on their preparations for the games. Learn more about the…

How 3D Printing is Remodeling the Kitchen Cabinet Industry

I had the pleasure of speaking on behalf of Javelin’s 3D printing team at the CKCA Fall Regional Event on September 20th, 2016. Founded in 1972, the Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Association (CKCA) is a national association that promotes the interests and conserves the rights of kitchen cabinet, bathroom vanity and related millwork manufacturers, as well as their suppliers and dealers, throughout Canada. Leading up to the event I felt a little uneasy on what to focus on to deliver an interesting and engaging presentation. I did my research and called around to some of the members and hit my notebook. What I came to realize was, no matter the size of a home product company, everyone can use an extra set of hands while manufacturing and installing their products. As the day of the presentation loomed closer I felt increasingly prepared yet slightly uneasy. Upon my arrival at the event…

3D Printed Jig Gets Tested in the Waves

Most of you do not know this, but in my previous career I was a professional windsurfer. I competed for Team Canada and represented Canada at many international events around the world. I have taken some time away from the sport since retiring in 2012, as I needed a mental break after running around the world for 6 straight years! This summer, however, I was bitten by the windsurfing bug again – and I am loving it! The Problem So, what does 3D printing and have to do with the re-kindling of my love for windsurfing? Well, on my first day out windsurfing this summer I dusted off my gear and rigged up for what was going to be an epic day on the water. Sure enough, I put my gear together and a critical piece broke at the top of the mast that holds the mast in the correct position in the sail. There…

3D Printed Injection Mold Prototype saves a Canadian business from a $20K mistake!

3D Printed Injection Mold

Last week I popped in on our customer Uni-Spray Systems Inc. to catch up with the owner and find out how his Stratasys Connex3 260 3D printer is impacting his business and found out that 3D printing saved a $20K mistake with a 3D printed injection mold prototype! Six months has elapsed since they purchased the 3D printer from us and I’m ecstatic to report that 3D printing is reducing costs and saving time in critical areas of their business. Uni-Spray has some fantastic stories of how 3D printing has positively impacted their workflow. The other day the company quoted an injection mold tool to make a customized vent for their customer. The issue with the designed end part were the thin walls riddled throughout the component. Creating the steel tool was going to cost upwards of $20,000 and there was no guarantee the costly tool would yield a successful vent. Testing a…

3D Printed Architectural Models are helping to build our future

Architectural 3D Printed Model

In recent months the 3D printing application within architecture and landscaping is really heating up! The growth in this space is staggering. I have been working with customers across the country who have adopted 3D printing as a tool for conceptual models and show models to win bids faster, easier, and cheaper. It’s a win, win, and win really. Shown in the table below is a comparison from the architectural firm KMCA in the United States of older method of architectural model creation and their newly implemented Stratasys Fortus 250mc production machine. As you can see the 3D printed model was created in half the time at a 60% reduction in cost! METHOD TIME COST Stick construction 8 weeks $20,000 3D printing 4 weeks $8,000 Savings 4 weeks / 50% $12,000 / 60% Traditional vs. 3D Printed Model Construction For KMCA during construction of a development in CityCenterDC, 3D printed…
