Methods for Opening and Inserting Models in SOLIDWORKS from the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

Article by Scott Durksen, CSWE updated May 9, 2023

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform provides significant flexibility when working with data. The powerful search functionality with filters and tags makes it quick to find the model. Bookmark Editor helps organize projects making it easy to browse for components. More information can be found in our Managing CAD Data on 3DEXPERIENCE series. There are many options on how to open and insert models within SOLIDWORKS. This flexibility can streamline how you access your designs.

Managing CAD Data on 3DEXPERIENCE Part 3: Accessing Data

Open Menu

The Open menu can still be used to access the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.  Initially it may browse for local files, however the Open from 3DEXPERIENCE button gives you access to 3DSearch and Bookmarks.

MySession Taskpane

The MySession taskpane is the quickest way to jump right into search. You can open the model by drag and drop into an empty session of SOLIDWORKS.

Selecting the Compass gives access to the Bookmark Editor app directly in SOLIDWORKS. Again, you can drag and drop into an empty session.

Web Browser

Files can also be dragged directly from a web browser, either from the Bookmark Editor app or from search results.

Right-clicking on a file in the web browser gives an option for Open With. Depending on the roles you have assigned, it may be Design with SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Connected. This will open the file in a current session of SOLIDWORKS. Otherwise, it will launch SOLIDWORKS automatically.

Insert Components

The Insert Components tool can be used with selecting Open from 3DEXPERIENCE, like the Open menu.

It’s typically faster to drag and drop from either MySession or a web browser.

Opening from MySession Without Inserting

If a model is already open, drag and drop from MySession will insert the component. If you need to open a model independently, either drag and drop on the CommandManager or right-click and Open.
