Fall is fast approaching, and you know what that means! Pumpkin spice lattes, turkey dinners, and weather that makes exercise about as appealing as waiting for your largest assembly to open. Luckily for us, keeping our file sizes under control is easy with the new SOLIDWORKS Silhouette Defeature options in 2019!
What is the Defeature tool?
Defeature is an invaluable tool for designers working with large assemblies or sensitive intellectual property. It allows users to derive simplified models from their existing designs, with interior geometry or complex features removed. This has allowed users to limit the information that is transmitted with a model, while also optimizing the size and performance requirements of parts in a top-level assembly.
The new SOLIDWORKS Silhouette Defeature options improve the experience of using the tool to simplify designs for use in larger assemblies. Users are now able to simplify geometry based on their parts’ external outlines, making it easy to quickly produce low-detail representations of designs.
How does the SOLIDWORKS Silhouette Defeature work?
SOLIDWORKS Silhouette Defeature utilizes several user-controlled simplification methods for producing the silhouette geometry. Users can take advantage of several different methods when simplifying different portions of their design, allowing granular control over the level of simplification. The most basic methods produce an extrusion by fitting a cylinder or a polygon to the outline of the selected feature/body. Users can also opt to include more detail by using a tight fit outline, which can then be extruded in one or multiple directions. If a section requires full detail, users can choose to simply copy the geometry directly to the defeatured part. Intuitive selection options allow users to group components by their simplification method, making it easy to add or remove details in the future. A preview window is updated as each group is added, allowing users to easily keep track of and verify the simplification process.
The new Silhouette Defeature options in SOLIDWORKS 2019 provide a convenient new way of trimming down the resource load of components in your large assemblies. This improvement will enable you to optimize parts in a matter of minutes, letting you get back to focusing on your design. Are you looking for more ways to improve your large assembly performance?
