Canadian Additive Manufacturing gives Global Vehicle Systems a competitive advantage

Story by Karen Majerly on September 11, 2018

Learn how Global Vehicle’s team of mechanical and electrical designers relies on support from Javelin Technologies, from training them in using SOLIDWORKS software to its full potential, to guiding them through the monumental shift from traditional machining to additive manufacturing.

Since 1999, Global Vehicle Systems (GVS) has been a key resource for top-tier automotive parts manufacturers, helping them compete and excel.

Each tooling and automation system GVS creates is custom — designed, built, and tested to the highest standards of quality and performance. Timelines are tight, and meeting deadlines is essential to the overall vehicle manufacturing process that GVS plays a role in.

Global Vehicle’s team of Canadian mechanical and electrical designers relies on support from Javelin Technologies, from training them in using SOLIDWORKS software to its full potential, to guiding them through the monumental shift from traditional machining to additive manufacturing.

Today, everything GVS once machined in plastic is 3D printed in-house, using the Fortus 450mc production system by Stratasys.

Stephane Boucher is Vice President of Operations for Global Vehicle Systems. We talked to him about the impact of moving to additive manufacturing. He told us about the biggest benefit — unlimited creativity.

“We can now make things that we couldn’t before. Additive manufacturing removes the barriers that we had with traditional manufacturing approaches. We could come up with an idea, but we couldn’t make it. Today, we can execute the best solution for a customer’s application, not just the solution we can make.”

Global Vehicle Systems is located in Tilbury, the Chatham-Kent region of southwestern Ontario, Canada.
